Can you believe it’s been a decade? On June 19, 2026, Ana Sierra Counseling officially marks its 10th anniversary. It feels like just yesterday I was taking those first steps to build a practice that truly reflected the values I hold dear, expertise, cultural resonance, and deep-rooted healing.
Let’s dig in deeper. Ten years in business is a milestone for any entrepreneur, but in the mental health field, and specifically as a Latina-owned practice, this journey has been about so much more than just keeping the lights on. It’s been about creating a “model to follow”, a blueprint for how cultural brilliance and high-level research can coexist to provide the best possible outcomes for our community.
Whether you are a legal professional looking for a reliable partner or an individual ready to start your healing journey, I wanted to write about what this decade has taught us and why the “PhD-led, Latina-owned” label isn’t just a title, it’s a promise of superior care.
The Blueprint: Why Latina-Owned and PhD-Led Matters
In our community, representation is often the starting point. It’s vital to see someone who looks like you, speaks your language, and understands your heritage. But I’ve always believed that representation is only the floor; excellence is the ceiling.
Being a PhD-led practice means we aren’t just following trends; we are grounded in over 20 years of experience and academic rigor. When you walk through our doors (or join us online), you aren’t just getting “counseling.” You are getting evidence-based, research-backed interventions that are thoughtfully tailored to meet the needs of the Latinx community.
What makes this a “model to follow”?
Cultural Wisdom Meets Clinical Rigor: We don’t have to choose between “understanding the culture” and “following the data.” We do both.
Strategic Leadership: Managing a practice for ten years requires a level of organizational health that we now teach to other businesses through our organizational consulting and training.
Mentorship and Growth: We pride ourselves on being a space where other Latinx clinicians can see a path for their own leadership.
So how do we take care of this? We keep the focus on the human being in front of us while holding ourselves to the highest clinical standards in the industry.

Beyond Representation: Research-Backed Excellence
It is clear that the mental health landscape is changing, but some things remain constant: the need for thorough, ethical, and expert care. In my 20+ years in this field, I have seen how much a difference it makes when a clinician understands the nuances of ethnic minority psychology and trauma-informed care.
When we talk about “Cultural Brilliance,” we are talking about the ability to translate complex psychological concepts into a framework that makes sense for a client’s life. It’s about knowing that “it is ok not to be ok” and providing a safe space to explore that. It also means using evidence-based interventions in ways that are specifically adapted for the lived experiences, values, language, and realities of the Latinx community.
Our Approach to Healing
Some tips for what to expect when working with a PhD-level practitioner include:
Comprehensive Assessments: Comprehensive immigration evaluations and other mental health assessments. We look at the whole person, their history, their environment, and their goals, and we work with attorneys and other providers connected to the client’s life as needed.
Evidence-Based Tools: Whether it’s hypnosis or cognitive behavioral strategies, we use what the research says works, and we use up-to-date research to continue learning how interventions can adapt better to our community.
Cultural Nuance: We understand the “Dichos,” family dynamics, and the specific stressors of diverse populations. We deeply understand cultural values like familismo, respeto, simpatia, marianismo, and other concepts that have strong operational definitions in the literature of Latino mental health in psychology.
Strengthening Legal Cases: The Power of Expert Immigration Evaluations
For the legal professionals we work with, the attorneys, paralegals, and law firms across DC, VA, MD, TX, FL, and NJ, reliability is everything. You need an expert who doesn’t just “check a box” but provides a mental health evaluation that can stand up to the highest level of scrutiny.
This is where the PhD-level research rigor truly shines. Our immigration evaluations are not just summaries of conversations. They are expert documents that weave together clinical findings with research on trauma, displacement, and the psychological impact of immigration.
Why Attorneys Choose Ana Sierra Counseling:
Expert Credibility: With over 20 years of experience and court-certified expertise, Dr. Sierra brings a level of authority that strengthens legal arguments.
Cultural Competence: We conduct evaluations in the client’s native language and with a deep understanding of their cultural context.
Thoroughness: Our reports are detailed, research-backed, and designed to provide a clear picture of the mental health factors at play in hardship, asylum, or VAWA cases.
Reliability: We know your deadlines are tight. We act as a professional partner you can count on.
If you are a legal professional, you know that the difference between a “good” case and a “successful” case often lies in the details. We provide those details with clinical precision.

10 Years of Healing and 100% Giving Back
To celebrate our 10th anniversary, we wanted to do something that reflects the heart of this practice. It’s not enough to just throw a party; we want to fuel the community that has fueled us for a decade.
For our anniversary event on June 19th, 100% of the proceeds are being donated to local non-profits.
Why? Because healing doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It happens when we support the organizations that provide housing, legal aid, and advocacy for those who need it most. This practice was built on the idea that when one of us rises, we all rise. Honor your feelings, celebrate your growth, and help us give back.
Ways we continue to impact the community:
Podcast Education: Through ‘Encuentros con la Dra. Ana Sierra’, we bring mental health education to the ears of thousands for free.
Organizational Change: With years of experience in local, national, and international professional consulting, we work with non-profits and businesses to ensure their workplaces are culturally responsive and trauma-informed.
Supporting the next generation of Latinx mental health experts.
Creating a Bridge for the Next Generation
As a Latina leader in mental health, I believe it is not enough to simply build a successful practice; we also have to create space for others to grow. For me, that means opening doors, offering mentorship, and helping upcoming clinicians see that there is a place for them in this field, especially when they are committed to serving the Latinx community with skill, heart, and cultural understanding.
This practice has always been about more than direct services. It has also been about becoming a bridge, connecting emerging clinicians to a model of care that is both clinically strong and culturally grounded. When newer professionals can learn in spaces where their identity, language, and values are respected, they are better equipped to serve families and communities in ways that truly matter. That is especially powerful when those clinicians are bilingual and bicultural, bringing both professional training and lived cultural understanding into the room.
That kind of mentorship creates ripple effects. It helps build the next generation of culturally competent professionals who can lead with confidence, represent our communities with integrity, and continue raising the standard of care for Latinx clients for years to come. As we celebrate 10 years of this practice, that commitment remains a big part of what we are honoring.
Mentorship in Action
One of the most meaningful parts of this work is seeing talent grow inside a space that values both excellence and cultural connection. At Ana Sierra Counseling, mentorship is not just an idea; it is something we live out by supporting bilingual and bicultural clinicians who are dedicated to serving our communities with empathy, skill, and professionalism.
That is part of what makes this 10-year milestone so meaningful; we are not only celebrating where we have been, but also the talented professionals helping shape where culturally responsive care is going next.
